What is Self-Determination?

Strengthening Self-Determination Through Collective Action

Expanding Self-Determination is a collective effort—bringing together individuals, families, advocates, and policymakers to break barriers and build capacity. Through research, training, and collaboration, we empower participants, equip professionals, and drive policies that strengthen self-directed services. Together, we create a future rooted in choice, control, and equity.

Who are we?

The Self-Determination Institute (SDI) is a 501c3 non-profit created to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) to lead self-directed lives through training, research, outreach, and thought leadership. We champion choice, inclusion, and equity as fundamental rights, ensuring meaningful opportunities to live, work, and engage in the community.

Founded in 2009 by parents and professionals, SDI addresses service gaps, social isolation, and barriers to inclusion. With decades of experience, we equip individuals, families, and providers with the tools to navigate the Self-Determination Program (SDP) and promote person-centered practices.

Why work with us?

The Self-Determination Institute is led by experts in the field of disability rights, advocacy, and self-determination. Our team brings decades of professional experience, alongside the invaluable perspective of lived experience as individuals with disabilities, parents, and advocates. We understand the challenges firsthand and are dedicated to breaking barriers, expanding access, and empowering individuals to take control of their lives. We don’t just teach self-determination—we live it, advocate for it, and help you achieve it.

Research & Thought Leadership

Our research program and Statewide Think Tank on Self-Determination drive evidence-based policy and service improvements in disability services, self-determination, and competitive integrated employment. Through needs assessments, data-driven evaluations, and collaborative policy solutions, we identify barriers and opportunities to create sustainable, person-centered change. By uniting experts, self-advocates, families, and policymakers, we ensure self-directed services remain accessible, equitable, and responsive to lived experiences.
